#MicroblogMondays: Being an Aunt

I was busy being an aunt this time last week, travelling north to go to a dance recital (and to support my sister who is launching her photography business). It was lovely. I do envy you if you have nieces and nephews who live close by, though I know too that I'm lucky to have a niece at all. Still, when I visit, it is a Big Deal in a way it probably wouldn't be if I lived just around the corner. Both DH and I got to read bed-time stories, and I got to take her to school one morning too. Though that morning, when she got in bed with me to chat, her main concern was whether I knew where to go! I look forward to when she is older, and can come visit on her own (though with some trepidation too).

I've spent the week since recovering. See more about it here at A Separate Life, with a few photos.

  2. Being an only child has its downfalls. And having no nieces or nephews is one. Not having someone to share the burden of caring for aging parents is another. I am happy for you that you get to have such a special relationship.

  3. You sound like an amazing aunt! Being an aunt is awesome. I like to say that I get to spoil them and then return them to their owner. :)

  5. I love being an aunt, though we are round-the-corner types. It's good to be able to switch off and have someone you trust handle kid responsibilities every now and then.

  6. I spent a lot of time with my older niece and nephews when they were small - I loved it and so did they. They got a little older and I moved away, but I would come back for work every now and then. When I did, I would bring them donuts before school. We always had the best time together. I've never been able to spend as much time with my other sister's daughters, but when we get together, we do have a grand time too. We don't spend too much time with the kids on my husband's side, but there are a lot of them (11 and probably more to come). I'm sad that my husband's siblings are not great aunts/uncles to my daughter, but they've had no examples, so I can't blame them too much.

  7. Fun! I'm getting to be an aunt this week. To very different aged girls so I get the best of both worlds.

  8. Wish there weren't so many miles separating me from my aunt duties, but like you mentioned it makes the time we do spend together that much more sweet.

  10. that sounds very joyful!! I really look forward to being an aunt one day. Ross' stepbrother has kids so I'm "aunt" to them in some form, but seeing as how all 3 have been over the age of 12 since I've known them it is not quite the same. Ross' cousin has kids and we live in the same area as them, so we are some what aunt/uncle to the little ones. And I have the "aunt" title to a couple of friends kiddos... but I really look forward do the day when my sister or Ross' brother have a kid and I get the real "aunt" title. It is funny how that real title can make a mental difference.

  11. Hmmm...all my nephews (no nieces!) live far from me and the ones from hubby's side were already teenagers when we met, so only hubby had a chance at doing all those fun uncle moments with them when they were much younger (he babysat them every now and then) and I live too far away from my brother's boys to be able to do anything much (though I do tend to buy a lot of things for them whenever I come for a visit). However, it's strange but I'm quite OK with that. Hubby's nephews are grown-ups now and when they come for a visit every now and then, it's a whole different relations, but it's also nice to be able to spend time with them and watch them spread their wings and fly from their nest.
