#MicroblogMondays: It’s that Day-that-shall-not-be-named again

Yes, it’s that time again. Unless of course you live in the UK and have already blissfully moved past this day, but are now plagued with images of the new royal princess, as well as the joys of an election - know that I feel your pain.

Recently I found my way back to a post I somehow missed last year from Beef Princess, who wrote about reclaiming Mother’s Day; a lovely perspective about honouring your dreams of being a mother, your loss and pain, so you can then re-enter the world fully and embrace life.

As for us, we tend to avoid restaurants and cinemas on Mother’s Day, and thanks to the joys of public commercial-free radio, and streaming or pre-recording anything on TV, I rarely see any ads for the day, and so can get through it relatively unscarred.

Still, last weekend in the newspaper there were five hints on how to behave for Mother’s Day, including advice such as “don’t give your mother a new vacuum cleaner, but offer to do the cleaning for a week.” The last piece of advice was a good one, suggesting that people be aware of those who don’t like the day, like “those who don’t like their mothers, or who don’t have them anymore.” It was a pity they ignored those women who aren’t mothers, but nurture and love others just the same.

So I’ll do it here, and honour all those M.O.Ms (Mentors of Many) who visit here, and thank you for your kindness and compassion and wisdom over the last year.

  1. It's actually the images of the new royal princess that are getting under my skin more than Mother's Day. As you said, if you avoid television commercials and radio commercials, it's somewhat easy to ignore the holiday. Well... except for my feed reader. My feed reader is filled with Mother's Day posts from the big sites.

  2. Thanks for this post. This is our first mother's day and I am trying to ignore it but at the same time grappling with what that means. Oh complicated commercialism.

  3. Mother's day wasn't ever that big when I was growing up and my mom was alive. She never wanted bought things, but if we were to give her something, she preferred handmade or doing something nice. I feel the same...and more so think of my mom on this day, who is no longer with us on this plane. Such a complicated day.

  4. Ah, the holiday you just can't escape. Although we don't have cable and I am avoiding even Hulu this week, so I have YET to see a single commercial. Heh heh heh, take THAT nefarious holiday! I'm thinking of my mother-in-law, who lost her mother yesterday and for whom Mother's Day will be bittersweet for sure. I am writing a post about my weekend holiday escape, but thanks to a whoopsie from Bryce we'll be celebrating my birthday in a B&B for the holiday weekend. Aw, shucks, what a shame. :) Thanks as always for being so thoughtful and thinking of everyone who may have a difficult time with so many situations. May you have a peaceful day on Sunday, and attempt avoiding royal princess baby craziness, if that's at all possible.

  5. I'd like to leapfrog right through May. But, since I cannot I shall simply try to focus on diets and exercise. And learning new things at work.

    Peace.

  6. Thanks for the shout out on my M.O.M post!

Hard as it is when the inbox gets flooded with offers from every conceivable business, retailer or service, this barrage of unsolicited, bordering on tone deaf offers (my mother has no interest in the National Basketball Association Detroit Pistons) I know the flurry of marketing will end as quickly as it began.
p.s. hope Beef Princess is doing well. miss her blogging contributions...

  7. I too miss Beef Princess; she didn't post often, but whatever she did post definitely made its mark.

I'm planning my usual strategy of avoidance this weekend. Knowing I will be in very good company helps some, of course. ;) Hang in there!
